Downieville Carriage House Inn
|
| Downieville is in the northern reaches of the Sierra Nevada and was one of the foremostcities of the Northern Mines. One of the prettiest of the Gold Rush towns, Downieville is situated at the confluence of two sparkling rivers : the Downie River and the North Fork of the Yuba River. |
The downtown area of this quaint little town is like stepping back into
time, with its interesting buildings and historical landmarks. Walk the
narrow streets and wooden sidewalks. Browse through the unique small gift
and antique shops. Shop for authentic gold nugget jewelry. Dine in one
of several restaurants with riverfront views
and then enjoy a stage production at the Yuba Theatre. Or spend a relaxing
summer evening by sharing a town bench with some of the locals and watching
the world go by.
A wealth of history is available wherever you
turn. Visit the museums and picture yourself here when the town began
in 1848. The Museum on Main Street is
filled with Gold Rush artifacts and early photographs. It is open
10- 5 May through October. The Foundry on Pearl Street houses a miniature model of turn-of-the-century
Downieville. Tours are offered at a nominal cost. See the historic town gallows (1885) still standing outside the County
Courthouse.
